Dear America,

By Dora H

Dear America,

The American Dream seems to be a myth to some and a lie to others. I'm talking about the one where anyone can make it in America. I find that dream to be outdated. This is not a reasonable dream anymore. If anything it's just an old dream and nothing more than that.

You see America, this dream was created by people from the past for people who were just like them. When the constitution was written it was not designed with progress in mind. Sure there were amendments just in case things were going to “change.” But even with change, the system stays the same. This document intended that white men and only white men would run the country. In the past, they didn’t let the black people or women even vote. Slavery was legal.

So America, you don’t have the best past but is today that much better?

Women and Blacks can vote but after slavery, came Jim Crow. And Women still struggle for equal pay. We need to stop shootings and mass racism, we need the LGBTQ+ community to be treated with love. I will say that we are getting closer to having equal and better lives. I will consider saying that the American Dream can become more of a reality . . But until it can be a dream for everyone it is actually a nightmare.

Sincerely,

Dora H.
