Afternoon Walk

By Penelope G

Late this afternoon

I strolled down the crumbling sidewalk

Stumbling over uneven pathways

My feet yet not familiar with the turns and bends of the road

I cast my gaze over picturesque stucco houses

Vast green yards

Tender tulips just barely creeping into the sunset air

I caught the cars going just a little too quickly

Past the brick buildings curved by delicate white trim

I felt the fading sunset on my skin and tilted my face toward the light

Listening to bird song

I grasped my brown sandwich bag with one hand and swing the other lightly

Finally I am happy

Finally I am content
